My Beloved New York City

One of my favorite cities in the world, and a place I called home for many years (in addition to LA, London, Vancouver, and more), New York City will always have my heart. It shaped my formative adult years, gave me the start to my career, some of the best friends anywhere, endless adventures, and so much more. Much like LA, NYC has been the backdrop of so many movies and series shown around the world, so it has captured the imagination of so many near and far. It is also an essential part of U.S. history, so I always recommend watching the fantastic 7-part PBS documentary series to really get into it.

New York City is one of the most iconic destinations in the world, known for its energy, cultural diversity, and endless attractions. From towering skyscrapers to historic landmarks and vibrant neighborhoods, NYC offers something for every traveler. Whether it’s your first visit or your tenth, the city’s dynamic nature ensures there’s always something new to discover. So walk, walk, and walk some more to get a true sense of the city, and like London, I often suggest the hop-on-hop-off bus for an overview for first timers.

A Brief History of New York City

Originally inhabited by the Lenape people, New York was colonized by the Dutch in 1624 and named New Amsterdam. In 1664, the British took control and renamed it New York. The city became a vital port, a hub for immigration, and a global financial center. Today, NYC is the most populous city in the U.S., home to over 8 million people and a melting pot of cultures from all over the world.
